Deloitte is committed to enhancing cardiac emergency preparedness for its employees nationwide. Inspired by his membership in the American Heart Association’s CEO Roundtable—a collaborative network of CEOs dedicated to fostering healthier companies and communities—Deloitte US CEO Jason Girzadas led an evaluation of the organization’s cardiac emergency preparedness plans. This included a review of existing protocols and identified opportunities to bolster Deloitte’s ability to enhance employee health and well-being.

With support from Girzadas and the senior leadership team, Deloitte updated its Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP). A key component of this initiative was the standardization and strategic placement of additional Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on every floor of all US Deloitte workplaces. AEDs are easy to locate with a clearly marked decal and tent sign, and they are in close proximity to any location on any floor.

“Our decision to equip every US workplace with AEDs underscores our unwavering dedication to employee health and wellness. Readily accessible AEDs can significantly improve survival rates in emergency cardiac situations. These devices bolster our emergency readiness and are user-friendly, making them easy to operate regardless of training. This is a huge step toward empowering one to act during a crisis,” said Girzadas.

In addition to the AED machine standardization and installation efforts, office staff and office leaders, along with all members of Girzadas’ senior leadership teams were provided with in-person CPR and AED training and certification to prepare them to respond confidently in emergencies. In 2025, Deloitte will begin offering CPR/AED training and certification to employees with the goal of certifying 11,000 people within the year.

“One of the greatest ways we can empower our people is to help prepare them for potential situations,” said Kulleni Gebreyes, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP and Chief Health Equity Officer.

The bolstered emergency plan and AED presence “empower our teams to be more helpful and responsive in emergencies,” Gebreyes said. “AEDs are not just devices. They symbolize our commitment to the health and wellness of our people.”

Deloitte’s proactive approach underscores its long-standing commitment to workplace health and safety. By empowering employees with the knowledge and tools to act, Deloitte helps prepare its people to respond both at work and in their communities.

Girzadas’ leadership serves as a blueprint for other CEOs. By clearly communicating the importance of this review and implementing enhanced measures, Deloitte significantly contributes to the AHA’s goal of turning bystanders into lifesavers through CPR and AED awareness and education.
